If there is any doubt that there is a dire need for more affordable housing in our community, the number of seniors waiting in line to submit an application at Washington Terrace should put that myth to rest. At 9:00 AM on March 1st, DHIC opened up the application process for Booker Park North at Washington Terrace, the second phase of the Washington Terrace redevelopment project, offering 72 apartment homes for seniors age 62 and older.
Aspiring residents were lined up as early at 3:00 AM and by lunch time, over 130 applications were received by DHIC’s property management team, Community Management Corporation. Combined with the applications received on a priority basis from current residents at Washington Terrace, we have stopped accepting applications for Booker Park North.
Over 800 individuals requested information on Booker Park North and were notified of the application process. This high level of interest is indicative of the need for affordable housing options in our community as housing costs have outpaced local incomes. The Triangle is growing, and we are steadfast in our commitment to bring more affordable rental homes to the area and offering our homebuyer education services to anyone who’s interested in purchasing their first home.
The initial phase includes 162 new apartments at The Village at Washington Terrace for individuals and families. This phase also includes on-site management services, a 5,400 square foot child care facility leased and operated by the Methodist Home for Children, community clubhouse, business center, laundry facility, fitness room, and on-site resident services coordination. We are currently seeking financing to build the next phase, Booker Park South at Washington Terrace, which will provide another 68 apartments for seniors with modest incomes.
