Mayor Schewel, former Mayor Bill Bell, and members from Durham City Council, Self-Help, DHIC, NeigborWorks America, Durham CAN, NCHFA, AJ Fletcher Foundation, Duke University and Captiol Broadcasting pose for a groundbreaking photo.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2019 DHIC and partners, Self-Help, the City of Durham, Duke University and AJ Fletcher Foundation, celebrated the Groundbreaking of Willard Street Apartments in Durham, NC.

Once complete in 2020, Willard Street Apartments will offer 82 affordable apartment homes (39 one-bedroom & 43 two-bedroom) for modest wage earners working in downtown Durham with a mix of 30% and 60% Area Median Income (AMI) units. Willard Street Apartments will be a part of a four-story building with two elevators built above two stories of structured parking.  There will also be street-level commercial space and a landscaped plaza overlooking the city skyline.

This project is made possible in part by advocacy from Durham CAN and the Coalition for Affordable Housing and Transit.  In January 2017, Self-Help and DHIC, Inc. were selected as the City’s partners to develop the site. Other development team members include Cline Design (Architect), Kimley-Horn (Civil Engineering), and Weaver Cooke (General Contractor). Funding partners include the NC Housing Finance Agency (9% LIHTCs), the City of Durham, Duke University, the AJ Fletcher Foundation, RBC Capital Markets, PGIM Real Estate Finance, Capital Bank, and the Durham Housing Authority (committed 21 project-based vouchers to this project).
