Continued Funding of Carlton Place Up-Fit ApprovedĀ
The Raleigh City Council today approved the continuation of $54,000 in Community Enhancement Grant Program funding to assist with the up-fit of office space and meeting and class rooms at Carlton Place for use by the Literacy Council of Wake County, in partnership with the Downtown Housing Improvement Corporation (DHIC). Carlton Place is a mixed-use development located at 450 East Davie St.
The Community Enhancement Grant Program is funded with Community Development Block Grant public service money provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The funding was initially approved by Council at its September 6, 2011 meeting for the up-fit of the space for use by the YWCA to provide services to families with low incomes. The funding was suspended when the YMCA ceased operations.
On October 19, 2012 DHIC entered into an agreement with the Literacy Council of Wake County to fulfill the HUD requirements to provide services to families with low and moderate incomes. The Literacy Council works with volunteer one-on-one tutors to teach adults how to better read and write.
