Women Pave the Way for Affordable Housing

As we celebrate Women’s History Month this year, we thought it would be a great time to recognize the impact that women have on our communities, especially when it comes to creating affordable housing opportunities.

Here at DHIC alone:

• Out of our portfolio of residents, 78% of the Heads of Household are women
• 13 of our 21 staff members are women
• 6 of our 15 board members are women, including our Board Vice-Chair
• We have a female President and CEO

We’re proud of all of the women in our organization and those who live throughout our communities.  We are also proud to be a beneficiary of the hard work of Dorothy Mae Richardson, a trailblazer whose advocacy for affordable housing over five decades ago, in Pittsburg PA, served as the catalyst that led to the start of NeighborWorks America.

NeighborWorks America is a congressionally charted non-profit that supports affordable housing across the country.  DHIC has been part of the NeighborWorks America Network since 2000 and earlier this year, was proud to be one of 239 nonprofits in the US to receive a portion of the $77 million in grant money awarded by NeighborWorks America.

DHIC will use the resources to honor Dorothy Richardson and all the women like her who have paved the way for us to do the work we do today, by investing in our communities and helping to make affordable housing a reality for families in our neighborhoods.

From DHIC employees and board members to strong heads of households, the DHIC community as a whole celebrates women today and every day, recognizing that they play an integral role in bettering our communities.
